Emery in the Europa League

Wenger always said that stringing wins together is the quickest way to move up the table. Now, with three consecutive wins in the premier league, the players should be gaining confidence in themselves and the new system. It is clear that Emery is still figuring out his best side while making accommodations for the opponents for each match.

The squad is still in the learning phase under this new manager. Our play is starting to take shape, but the strategy has not exactly come to light. The defensive errors are abundant and will continue to be punished. While many of the attacks are coming together, they tend to be opportunistic rather than constructed. By this, I mean that the first half of the strategy for the buildup is there, but the play in and around the opposition box seems fortuitous instead of intentional. Once this clicks, we’ll be seeing the creativity of the players within Emery’s system.

There will be a deadline on this, however, as the season is fast approaching the ten-game mark where the table begins to take shape. Nonetheless, the overriding feelings amongst supporters are intrigue and excitement which is something that we have not been able to claim in recent years.

Perhaps the most exciting part of Emery figuring out his squad will be the proving ground that is the Europa league. The first match is this week, and we can plan to see the fringe players vying for a bid to make it to the PL side. If all goes well, it will also be an opportunity to experiment with different partnerships. It’s not all a wash, however, as it’s reasonable to expect that Emery will use the competition to lay down a marker in his first season in charge.

PS – Gazidis is out. Don’t cry.
