Squad Shakeup
After making it through a treacherous run of opposition, the unbeaten run that Arsenal was building has finally come to an end. It would be less infuriating if it was not at the hands of the mighty Southampton, to temporarily lift themselves out of the relegation zone. The result felt like it had been a long time coming, with narrow victories and a string of injuries in recent weeks.
I had begun writing a post before the league matches against Spurs and United, but my nervous optimism kept me from releasing before the results. It’s a good thing that it did, but it’s not all doom and gloom now. Taking 4 out of 6 points from those fixtures would be acceptable if there was not such an emotional investment in the matches.
Glossing over the North London Derby in the league cup, it was incredible to see Emery making sure that Dyche knows what he thought of the Burnley match. His drive is bleeding its way into the players and it’s apparent that competition for places is back at the Arsenal. It’s busy festive period leading into Emery’s first transfer window, we are sure to find ourselves surprised by lineups and transfer speculation. Unai’s hands are tied on some contracts, but he will be entering January with an idea of the personnel required moving forward.
